Obverse description Cast copper cash-type coin featuring a central square hole flanked by four large Chinese characters arranged in a cruciform reading order around the perforation. The legend reads clockwise from top: 寶 (top), 通 (right), 永 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the reign-era inscription 'Hōei Tsūhō' (寶永通寶), meaning 'Hōei Currency.' The characters are rendered in a bold, deeply incuse cast style with wide strokes, set within a plain inner rim surrounding the square hole and bounded by a raised outer rim. The flat field displays the characteristic dark patina of cast Edo-period copper coinage.
