The denomination 'مليمات' (Milliemes) is inscribed below the numeral, flanked on either side by the Hijri year (١٣٧٤) to the right and the Gregorian year (١٩٥٥) to the left. The coin is bordered by a continuous beaded inner rim. |

Egypt's transition to a republic in 1953, following the Free Officers' Revolution that deposed King Farouk, created an immediate need to replace the monarchy's coinage without the infrastructure or time for elaborate new designs. These milliemes filled that gap, issued under the authority of the new republic before the Nasser government consolidated its iconographic program. The two KM varieties reflect a die modification made between the 1954 and 1955 strikings — the sphinx's proportions were subtly reduced, giving the type its collector designation.
