Issued as part of the FAO coinage program that proliferated across developing nations throughout the 1970s, this piece was struck to promote agricultural development and food security under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's broader campaign. Sudan's participation came during the Nimeiry government's brief experiment with socialist-aligned economic planning before the country's sharp turn toward Islamic law in 1983.
The FAO series was funded partly by the issuing nations themselves, with production costs offset by collector sales — meaning many of these pieces never entered circulation at all.
