Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which encouraged member nations to mint circulating coins carrying agricultural themes as a form of public education during the hunger crises of the 1970s. Egypt participated actively in the FAO program throughout the decade, releasing several denominations tied to specific development campaigns.
The 1975 issue coincides with the FAO's broader push following the 1974 World Food Conference in Rome, convened after grain shortages and the oil embargo had pushed global food prices to crisis levels.
