Egypt's 1960 coinage program coincided with the early years of the United Arab Republic, the short-lived political union between Egypt and Syria proclaimed by Nasser in 1958. Aluminium alloy patterns from this period were part of broader explorations into cheaper base-metal compositions as the government weighed production costs against the demands of a rapidly expanding population and a monetarily strained economy.
This piece never entered circulation. Pattern issues of this type exist in very small quantities, produced solely for evaluation by mint authorities and the relevant government ministries.
