Brazil's First Republic was barely a year old when this note entered circulation. The transition from Empire to Republic in November 1889 triggered immediate pressure on the treasury, and the Encilhamento — the speculative financial frenzy of 1890–1891 — drove an aggressive expansion of the money supply. Notes like this one were part of that flood, authorized under the new republican government's early monetary decrees.
The "8th Print" designation distinguishes successive print orders placed with ABNC during a period when demand consistently outpaced supply. Earlier prints of the P#30 series are the scarcer survivors; this run had wider distribution before inflation and the eventual currency reforms of the mid-1890s pulled most examples out of use.
