The Banco Nacional do Brazil was a short-lived private institution chartered in 1889 under the early republican government, granted note-issuing privileges as part of the Encilhamento — the speculative boom that followed the proclamation of the Brazilian Republic and the sweeping banking reforms pushed through by Finance Minister Rui Barbosa. The policy flooded the market with bank-issued paper, and the Nacional was one of several institutions that collapsed before the decade was out.
ABNC produced the plates in New York; the "1st. Print" designation distinguishes this from later printings with altered vignettes or serial numbering, not a different printer.
