| Opmerkingen |
The Banco da República dos Estados Unidos do Brazil was itself a product of the Encilhamento — the speculative bubble that followed the proclamation of the Brazilian Republic in 1889, during which the new government dramatically expanded money-issuing privileges to multiple regional and private banks. The result was runaway credit expansion, rampant share speculation, and eventual monetary collapse. This note was issued directly into that environment.
Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig handled the printing, as they did for a substantial portion of Brazilian paper currency in this period. The bank itself was short-lived; by 1893 it had been absorbed into the Banco da República do Brasil following consolidation attempts to stabilize the wreckage of the Encilhamento.
