Mozambique's second family of meticais coins — introduced in 2006 after a 1000-to-1 redenomination that replaced the metical with a new metical — reflects one of the more orderly currency reforms in post-civil-war southern Africa. The redenomination was tied to decades of accumulated inflation stretching back to the early 1980s conflict, with the old 10,000-metical note effectively becoming this coin.
Banco de Moçambique maintained continuous production across a notably long span for a circulation bimetallic, running through at least 2021 without a design revision.
