Abd al-Aziz inherited the Moroccan throne at age fourteen and ruled under the effective regency of Ba Ahmed until 1900, after which his own administration lurched through a series of costly foreign concessions and domestic rebellions. The 10 Mazunas bronze issues of this period were struck as Morocco's financial independence was being systematically undermined — French, Spanish, and British interests were actively competing for influence, culminating in the Algeciras Conference of 1906 which effectively ended Moroccan fiscal autonomy. The Fes mint, one of several striking this type, produced Y#17.3 alongside parallel issues from Marrakesh and Berlin.
