Brown and ochre reverse centred on a large dark vignette of the rearing Brunswick white horse (the Sachsenross), the heraldic symbol of the Duchy of Brunswick, rendered in a woodcut-style intaglio within a rectangular frame. Flanking lateral panels carry a geometric diamond-pattern guilloche underprint with large '10 M' numerals at each corner. Below the central vignette, the inscriptions 'Staatskassenschein' and 'Herzogtum Braunschweig' are set in bold blackletter on an ochre ground, with a penal clause in small Fraktur script at the foot; the designer credit 'Entwurf: Günther Clausen' and printer credit 'Gedruckt von Aug. Wehrt' appear in the lower margins. |

Brunswick's Finanzkollegium issued this note in 1918 as the wartime Reich coinage shortage forced German states and municipalities into producing their own Staatskassenscheine — state treasury notes functioning as small-denomination substitutes. The duchy's financial authority had limited room to maneuver; the 10 Mark denomination sat at the upper edge of what was practically acceptable as emergency scrip.
Aug. Wehrt was a Brunswick commercial printer, not a specialist banknote firm, which shows in the relatively modest production values typical of provincial wartime issues. Clausen's design commission was local work for a local press.
