Issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Nationale Volksarmee, founded in January 1956 after the GDR formally rearmed — a politically fraught move that required Moscow's blessing and came less than a decade after the Wehrmacht's defeat. East Germany had spent years insisting it would never rearm, making the NVA's creation an ideological contortion the SED had to sell carefully to its own population.
