The Berlin Mint traces its origins to 1280, making the 700th anniversary a legitimate landmark for one of the longest-continuously-operating mints in Europe. The GDR had a particular institutional interest in claiming that heritage — the mint on Molkenmarkt sat in East Berlin, and asserting its history was a straightforward act of cultural appropriation from a shared German past the West could no longer access.
Nickel brass commemoratives of this type circulated poorly; most were pulled from circulation immediately by collectors or held back at point of sale.
