Aschaffenburg's Stadtmagistrat issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that gripped Germany from roughly 1916 onward. Municipal authorities across Bavaria and beyond were authorized to produce small-denomination emergency issues to keep local commerce functioning when metal coinage disappeared into hoarding and war production.
