The city arms of Radolfzell — a crowned heraldic shield with supporters — occupies the centre, flanked on either side by the denomination inscription 'Zehn Mark' in large Gothic blackletter type. Two columns of text appear below the arms: the left column states the redemption conditions at the Stadtkasse Radolfzell by 1 February 1919, while the right column gives the date of issue 'Radolfzell, den 1. Dezember 1918' and the authority 'Der Gemeinderat', followed by a manuscript signature and an oval official ink stamp of the city. A serial number in Gothic script is printed at lower left. |

Radolfzell, a small lakeside town on the Untersee arm of Lake Constance, issued this note through its Stadtkasse — the municipal treasury — during the acute coin shortage that gripped Germany in the final year of the First World War. Metal had been systematically requisitioned for the war effort, and small denominations essentially vanished from everyday commerce. Municipal and corporate Notgeld filled the gap, often with no authorization beyond local necessity.
The official ink stamp served as the primary authentication mechanism, a telling sign of just how improvised the whole apparatus was. Poppen & Ortmann, a Freiburg academic press, had no special security printing pedigree — they were simply available.
