Furtwangen's municipal authority issued this 10 Mark Notgeld in 1918 as the imperial monetary system buckled under wartime strain. Stadtgemeinde notes of this denomination were unusual — most municipal emergency issues of the period topped out at 1 or 2 Mark, and a 10 Mark piece implied a local treasury confident enough, or desperate enough, to back a more substantial obligation.
Ant. Kämpfe of Jena was a minor commercial printer, not a specialist banknote firm. The choice reflects wartime conditions: security printers were overloaded with Reich-level commissions, leaving municipalities to work with whoever was available.
