Haspe was an independent industrial town in the Ruhr, centered on ironworks, before being absorbed into Hagen in 1929. This note is Notgeld — emergency municipal currency issued during the acute coin shortage of the First World War's final year, when the Reich's metal coinage had effectively disappeared from everyday commerce.
At the 10 Mark denomination, this sits at the upper end of practical Notgeld values for a town of Haspe's size. Most municipal issues of this period clustered around 50 Pfennig to 5 Mark; a 10 Mark piece suggests local industrial payroll pressure was a real driver behind the issue.
