Issued as part of Lesotho's broader commemorative program marking the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth, this coin reflects the small kingdom's participation in a wave of international issues that year — many nations with no direct historical connection to Washington produced silver pieces for the collector market. Lesotho was entirely dependent on South Africa economically and geographically in 1982, and hard currency from numismatic exports carried real fiscal weight for the government.
The .500 fineness is notably low for a commemorative silver of this period, when most sovereign mints were using .925 or .999.
