10 Macutas - Maria I and Pedro III

Angola's colonial copper macuta coinage was well established by the 1780s, but silver issues in this denomination were struck in far smaller quantities and primarily served administrative and commercial transactions rather than everyday exchange. This piece was produced under the joint reign of Maria I and Pedro III of Portugal — an unusual dual-monarch arrangement that lasted from 1777 until Pedro's death in 1786, after which Maria ruled alone and descended into the mental illness that eventually transferred effective power to her son João.

The Lisbon mint handled production of Angolan colonial silver during this period, as the colony lacked facilities for striking in precious metals.
