Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Louis XIII facing right, his flowing hair rendered in high relief with naturalistic curls characteristic of Jean Warin's medallic style. The king wears a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon at the back, and the truncation of the bust is bare. The date 1640 appears in the lower exergual area below the bust. The surrounding legend reads LVD • XIII • D • G • FR • ET • NAV • REX, separated by raised dots, running clockwise within a finely toothed inner border. The overall portrait displays the refined classicizing aesthetic introduced by Warin, marking a decisive break from earlier hammered coinage portraiture.
