The Caisse de l'Extraordinaire was not a bank in any conventional sense — it was the revolutionary government's mechanism for liquidating the properties of the Church and the crown, converting confiscated real estate into paper currency backed by those assets. The assignat system worked, briefly, until the volume of notes in circulation dramatically outpaced the land available to redeem them. By 1795, hyperinflation had effectively destroyed the currency's value entirely.
Gatteaux, a medallist and engraver of genuine reputation, was responsible for the dies and plate work on several assignat denominations. The 10 livres sits in an awkward middle register of the series — large enough to attract counterfeiters, small enough to circulate widely among tradespeople rather than merchants.
