Issued to mark the 675th anniversary of the first written mention of Vilnius, which appears in a 1323 letter by Grand Duke Gediminas inviting craftsmen and merchants to settle in his capital. That letter — written in Latin and sent to cities across Western Europe — is the earliest documentary evidence of Vilnius as a functioning city, and the coin's existence is a direct consequence of that specific archival fact.
