Issued to commemorate Pope John Paul II's visit to Lithuania in September 1993 — the first papal visit to the country and the first to any of the former Soviet Baltic states. The trip carried considerable political weight: Lithuania had only restored independence in 1990, and the Church had been systematically suppressed under Soviet rule for five decades.
