背面描述 A large winged thunderbolt depicted frontally at the center of the field, its central orb rendered in high relief with symmetrical lightning bolts radiating outward and wings spread to either side, conveying the power of Zeus. The legend BAΣIΛEOΣ is inscribed above in a broad arc, with the abbreviation KI positioned in the upper central field flanking the thunderbolt, and IEPΩNYMOY inscribed below in a corresponding arc, together reading 'of King Hieronymus.' The composition fills the flan boldly, enclosed within a plain border.

附加信息

Hieronymus ruled Syracuse for barely fourteen months before his assassination in 214 BC, making this among the briefest reigns to produce a named silver coinage in the Greek West. His brief tenure marked a sharp reversal of the pro-Roman policy his grandfather Hiero II had maintained for decades — Hieronymus pivoted immediately toward Carthage, a decision that drew Syracuse directly into the Second Punic War and ultimately led to the Roman siege under Marcellus.

The rarity of this issue is a direct function of the reign's length. Fourteen months of minting, then civil chaos.
