Hieronymus ruled Syracuse for roughly thirteen months before being assassinated in 214 BC, making his coinage among the most chronologically compressed of any Sicilian dynast. He had abandoned the pro-Roman policy of his grandfather Hiero II almost immediately upon taking power, pivoting to an alliance with Carthage just as Hannibal's Italian campaign was reaching its peak after Cannae. The mint window was short enough that all surviving issues derive from a very limited die sequence.
