Pidyon Haben — the redemption of the firstborn son — is a biblical obligation from Numbers 18:16, requiring a father to "redeem" his son from a kohen with five silver shekels. Israel's decision to mint a coin specifically denominated and weighted for this ritual was deliberate: the 1973 issue was intended to function as an actual ceremonial object, not merely a commemorative. Two varieties exist under KM#70.1 and KM#70.2, distinguished by edge lettering differences.
The coin appeared the same year as the Yom Kippur War.
