Issued as part of Malta's first gold coinage program following independence from Britain in 1964, this piece was struck during the early years of Dom Mintoff's socialist government — a period of deliberate distancing from Western alliances that saw Malta expel NATO forces and pursue ties with Libya and China. The gold series reflected an assertion of national financial credibility at a moment when Mintoff was renegotiating the terms of foreign military access on Maltese soil.
KM#34 was produced by the Franklin Mint under contract, as Malta lacked domestic minting infrastructure.
