Campo n. 5 at Serravalle Scrivia was one of several Italian POW camps that issued their own internal scrip during the Second World War, restricting prisoners' access to Italian currency and controlling what they could purchase within the camp canteen economy. The Apollonio printing house in Alessandria — a commercial firm, not a security printer — produced these notes, which explains the relatively simple construction. The yellow paper itself served as a basic differentiation device rather than a true security measure, supplemented by a handstamp applied at the camp.
Camb #5782 cross-references place this within a documented series, though camp scrip of this type was destroyed in quantity at liberation.
