Pius IX struck these gold pieces during the final, embattled years of papal temporal authority over Rome. By 1866 the Risorgimento had stripped the papacy of nearly all its territorial holdings, leaving only Rome and its immediate surroundings under French military protection. The coins amount to a defiant monetary gesture from a sovereign whose domain was collapsing around him.
Rome fell to Italian forces in September 1870, ending the issue abruptly. Examples struck at Rome bear no mint mark — the sole operating facility throughout this period.
