By 1989, the Vatican's aluminum 10 Lire had essentially no purchasing power in the Italian economy to which it was pegged — a single bus ticket in Rome cost several hundred lire. These annual Vatican issues survived almost entirely as devotional collectibles and gift sets rather than circulating currency, meaning most examples from this period were never spent.
