By 1991, Vatican aluminum coinage had become largely ceremonial — Italian lira inflation had rendered 10-lire pieces nearly worthless in actual commerce, and the Vatican's annual coin sets were produced almost entirely for collectors and papal gift exchange rather than circulation. This particular issue falls within the extended series commemorating figures from Acts of the Apostles, a thematic program John Paul II sanctioned across multiple years of Vatican coinage during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Uncirculated examples are the rule rather than the exception for this type. Genuine wear is essentially unknown.
