Obverse description The papal coat of arms of Pope John Paul II occupies the central field, depicting a quartered heraldic shield surmounted by the papal tiara and flanked by the crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield bears the distinctive Wojtyla arms in the upper sinister quarter. The circular legend around the periphery reads 'IOANNES PAVLVS II P.M.' at the top, with the regnal year 'AN. XXIII - MMI' along the lower arc. The engraver's signature 'MAUR. INC.' appears in small letters in the lower field beneath the shield.
