Lake Qaraoun was created artificially by the Qaraaoun Dam, completed in 1965 as the centerpiece of the Litani River Authority project — Lebanon's most ambitious postwar infrastructure undertaking, designed to generate hydroelectric power and redirect water to the arid south. The reservoir flooded several villages in the Bekaa Valley, displacing thousands of residents whose agricultural land had been worked for generations.
This one-troy-ounce bullion issue is part of the Banque du Liban's ongoing commemorative gold series celebrating Lebanese natural and cultural sites, struck well before the country's catastrophic 2019 financial collapse rendered such institutional prestige pieces an ironic artifact of a functioning central bank.
