The Jeita Grotto was Lebanon's official entry in the New7Wonders of Nature competition, which ran from 2007 to 2011 and drew hundreds of millions of votes worldwide. Lebanon campaigned aggressively for the site, and the grotto reached the final shortlist of 28 — but was ultimately excluded from the final seven, a result disputed by Lebanese officials who alleged voting irregularities. This coin was struck the following year.
KM#46 belongs to a Banque du Liban bullion and commemorative series that has issued fine gold pieces tied to Lebanese natural and cultural heritage since the early 2000s. The one-troy-ounce specification places it squarely in the international bullion coin format used by sovereign issuers globally.
