The American University of Beirut, founded in 1866 by Daniel Bliss as the Syrian Protestant College, received its current name only in 1920. Assembly Hall — the building commemorated here — was completed in 1881 and served as the institution's central gathering space through decades of Ottoman rule, the French Mandate, and Lebanon's postwar reconstruction.
