10 Libras

The Companhia de Moçambique — a chartered company granted administrative control over the territory of Manica and Sofala in 1891 — issued its own currency entirely separately from the Portuguese colonial authorities in Lourenço Marques. This note falls near the end of that currency's active period; the Company's right to issue banknotes was eventually absorbed as Portuguese control tightened through the 1920s.

Bradbury Wilkinson printed the series from their New Malden works, a logical choice given their extensive portfolio of colonial and company currency at the time. The 10 Libras denomination made it the highest-value note in the R-series, which limits surviving examples — high-denomination company notes were closely tracked and rarely left official hands for long.
