Zakhari Stoyanov was the 19th-century Bulgarian journalist and revolutionary whose three-volume chronicle of the April Uprising of 1876 remains the foundational primary source for that event — written partly from his own participation in it. He died in 1889 at thirty-two, having compressed an improbable amount of historical witness into a short life. This issue marks the 170th anniversary of his birth.
