Kaloyan ruled Bulgaria from 1197 to 1207 and is best remembered for his decisive defeat of the Latin crusader forces at the Battle of Adrianople in 1205, where he captured Emperor Baldwin I of Constantinople — a reversal that shocked the western powers and effectively checked Latin expansion into the Balkans. The Bulgarian National Bank has issued a sustained series of medieval ruler commemoratives, of which this is one, using selective gold plating as a consistent production choice across the range.
