Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse displays a centrally positioned gilded depiction of the celebrated Thracian gold funerary mask discovered in the 'Svetitsata' burial mound, attributed to a Thracian ruler and dated to the late fifth century B.C. The mask is rendered in high relief with selective gilt finish, faithfully reproducing its archaic artistic style and facial features. Encircling the outer ring, the Cyrillic legend 'СЪКРОВИЩАТА НА БЪЛГАРИЯ' (The Treasures of Bulgaria) frames the central motif along the periphery.

Aanvullende informatie

The Thracian gold mask referenced by this issue was excavated in 2004 near Shipka in the Valley of the Thracian Kings — a find significant enough that the Bulgarian government moved quickly to commemorate it within a year of discovery. The mask, dated to the 4th century BC and attributed to Thracian aristocracy, caused immediate debate among archaeologists over whether it represented a funerary object or a cult item.
