Issued as part of Bulgaria's ongoing Olympic sports commemorative program, this piece marks the country's participation in short track speed skating at a time when Bulgarian winter sports funding was under significant strain following the economic turbulence of the 1990s. The Bulgarian National Bank produced numerous silver commemoratives during this period, many in limited quantities, partly to generate hard currency revenue through collector sales abroad.
KM#280 carries a mintage low enough that secondary market examples surface infrequently.
