10 Leva Khan Omurtag

Khan Omurtag ruled Bulgaria from approximately 814 to 831 AD and is credited with negotiating a thirty-year peace treaty with Byzantium in 816, one of the longest formal truces between the two powers in that century. He was also a prolific builder — Greek-language inscriptions commissioned by him survive to this day, unusual for a ruler of a non-Hellenic state who nonetheless found Greek the most practical administrative script available.

The partial gold plating on issues of this Bulgarian commemorative series is applied selectively to highlight specific design elements, a technique the Bulgarian Mint has used consistently across its collector series since the early 2000s.
