The coin commemorates the 250th anniversary of История славянобългарска (Istoriya Slavyanobalgarska), the seminal historical chronicle completed by the monk Paisius of Hilendar in 1762. Written in secret at the Zograf Monastery on Mount Athos, the manuscript was a deliberate act of cultural defiance against Greek ecclesiastical dominance over Bulgarian religious and intellectual life. Paisius never saw it published — the text circulated entirely in handwritten copies for over a century before its first printed edition in 1844.
The Bulgarian National Revival movement drew heavily from its nationalist argument, making this manuscript arguably the single most politically consequential document in modern Bulgarian history.
