Obverse description Central device depicts the Madara Rider, a celebrated early medieval rock relief carved approximately 100 metres above ground on a cliff face in northeastern Bulgaria and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The relief shows an armoured horseman on a rearing horse, his spear thrust downward into a lion prostrate beneath the horse's hooves, with a dog following behind. The legend РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ (Republic of Bulgaria) arcs around the upper periphery in Cyrillic script.
