Bulgarian cinema traces its institutional origin to 1915, when the first domestic film production company was established in Sofia amid the chaos of the First Balkan War's aftermath and Bulgaria's entry into World War I. The centenary fell at an awkward moment nationally — the country was still navigating post-2008 austerity pressures — but the Bulgarian National Bank had maintained an active commemorative program throughout, issuing collector silver on themes from science, culture, and sport with considerable regularity.
