Greece's coinage in the late 1860s was complicated by its membership in the Latin Monetary Union, which imposed strict specifications on circulating issues. Pattern strikes like this one were produced to test designs or compositions before — or sometimes instead of — committing to full production runs, and the 1869 Greek patterns are generally attributed to the Paris Mint, which handled the bulk of Greek coinage during this period.
