Obverse description A Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) stands facing left atop a rocky outcrop, rendered in fine relief with naturalistic detail. Aquatic grasses and reeds frame the animal in the foreground and background, evoking its riparian habitat. The circular legend around the upper periphery reads SIERRA LEONE 10 LEONES 1987. The deeply mirrored proof fields provide strong contrast against the frosted devices.

Additional information

Sierra Leone's 1987 WWF coinage was part of a coordinated global program in which the World Wildlife Fund contracted with numerous developing-nation mints and issuing authorities to produce commemorative silver pieces timed to the organization's 25th anniversary. Dozens of countries participated, making this a series defined more by its fundraising architecture than by any single issuer's initiative.

The Bank of Sierra Leone had limited domestic minting infrastructure; these pieces were almost certainly struck abroad under contract.
