Romania's Superior War School — Școala Superioară de Război — was founded in 1889 in Bucharest, modeled closely on the French École Supérieure de Guerre, itself established only eight years earlier. Romanian officers trained under French doctrine there through both World Wars, a relationship that shaped the army's operational thinking well into the communist period, when the institution was restructured under Soviet influence and renamed.
