Issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the founding of Sambata de Sus Monastery in Transylvania, this coin commemorates the Brancoveanu-era institution that Constantin Brancoveanu, Prince of Wallachia, financed and built before his execution by Ottoman authorities in 1714. The monastery was later demolished on orders from the Habsburg administration and remained in ruins for nearly two centuries before restoration began under Metropolitan Nicolae Balan in the 1930s.
