Issued to mark the centenary of the Romanian Patriarchate, established in 1925 when the Romanian Orthodox Church was elevated to patriarchal status following the unification of the country after World War I. The elevation was closely tied to the political consolidation of Greater Romania, with the church's new rank reflecting the expanded territorial and national identity of the post-war state. Miron Cristea became the first Patriarch, having previously served as Metropolitan Primate.
