Beschrijving keerzijde The interior of the Romanian National Opera House in Cluj is rendered in meticulous relief, presenting a perspective view from the stage looking out over the auditorium, with tiered balconies, ornate arched ceiling vaults, and a decorative floral motif at the apex of the central arch. The raised stage curtain is depicted at centre foreground. The legend OPERA ROMANA DIN CLUJ curves along the upper arc of the field, and the founding year 1919 appears in large numerals at the lower portion of the field, commemorating the centenary of the institution.

Aanvullende informatie

The Romanian Opera in Cluj — officially Opera Națională Română Cluj-Napoca — was founded in 1919 immediately following the city's incorporation into Romania after the collapse of Austria-Hungary. Its establishment was a deliberate act of cultural consolidation in a city that had been, under Hungarian administration, home to a Magyar-language opera house since 1906. The institution opened with Romanian-language performances within months of the political transition, making it one of the fastest cultural institutions stood up in post-WWI Romania.

The centenary year of 1919–2019 prompted a broader commemorative program from the National Bank, of which this piece is one entry.
